CONCEPTUALIZATION AND PRELIMINARY DESIGN

Granell Hydraulic Engineers have carried out many Feasibility and Basic Design Projects in Canada, Panama, Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, Nicaragua, India, Nepal, Portugal and Spain, along the last 30 years.

The preliminary phases of the development of engineering tasks consist of conceiving the works to be carried out and obtaining their basic definition.

In the case of dams, conceiving the design involves selecting the dam typology and deciding on the type and location of the hydraulic elements such as spillways, water intakes, bottom outlets and the river´s diversion.

The factors that must be taken into consideration are of diverse nature: topographic, geological, geotechnical, structural, hydraulic and environmental among others. The optimal solution is one that satisfies the requirements of all the factors and manages to find a single and well balanced design.

Validating the structures, as well as reaching an in-depth understanding of their behavior,   involves tasks ranging from doing simple calculations to developing complex numerical models using specific software. Knowledge and expertise in working with different hydraulic forms and structural typologies are essential assets necessary to interpret these models.

These types of works are Pre-Feasibility Studies, Feasibility Studies and Basic Design Projects. Granell Hydraulic Engineers have carried out many of these in Canada, Panama, Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, Nicaragua, India, Nepal, Portugal and Spain, along the last 30 years.
